West Sussex agreed a council tax rise of 4.99% for this financial year, which took in 2% allowed by central government for social care and the 2.99% also allowed without triggering a referendum. While the council tax for the year 2020-21 has not yet been decided, it is a fact that the Covid-19 crisis has cost all councils a great deal of income.  Despite financial support from the Government of the day, income has drastically fallen from other sources, and it may be that some hard decisions will have to be made in the future in an effort to balance the books.

As a County Councillor, as always, I will be doing my utmost to ensure a fair deal for the people of Adur District and the maintenance of key services to our community.

Councillor David Simmons

Readers may recall that I have been part of a working group on the Policing Plan and the precept. At our meetings last year, we discussed the possibility of a £5 maximum increase for a Band 'D' property but when the Police Commissioner set out her requirement for £12 increase for a Band 'D' this was predicated on the basis of appointment of more police officers. I am pleased to report that the rise in precepts has allowed the Commissioner/force to recruit a further 200 officers over the next two years in adddition to the 600 or so who will leave the service during the same period. Since then further government money has been made available for police recruitment, so we can expect to see even more officers and PCSOs visible in our communities over the newxt few years. In fact already, dedicated PCSOs and officers have been allocated to County Council Divisional areas, and I have already had meetings with them to inform them of local policing issues.
