Black Lives Matter campaign

I am sure that many people will join me in thinking that we need to show support following the sad and totally avoidable death of George Floyd. Of course Black lives matter, but it is sad that some extreme elements are hijacking the situation and bringing violence and political dogma to lawful and safe protests. I would argue that the actions of that minority detract from the central message of the campaign to remove racism and inequality from our society and do nothing to further that cause.  Admittedly our Police Service is not without its faults, and as someone who during his 30 year police career tried his best to deal with such matters, I can truthfully say that our Police Service today is working hard to ensure that racism and inequality has no place in the service and has come a long way over the ensuing years to achieve just that.  What is clear is that some have taken this situation as an opportunity to attack the police, and we need to give police our support as they do their best to contain the violence that has erupted. The basis of Policing in the UK is policing by consent, something that we ignore at our peril. After all, our police go towards danger in order to provide us with a safe community and we should be grateful to them for all they do. I sincerely hope that all of our officers remain safe at these times of challenge, both through the pandemic and in tackling violence in our streets.
